Kamianske is an industrial city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and a port on the Dnieper River. It is located 400 km southeast of Kyiv in the central part of Ukraine and it is home to about 246,000 people. The economic base of Kamianske is almost exclusively centred on heavy industry, with ferrous metallurgy being the backbone of the local economy.
District heating is provided to residential buildings, public and industrial facilities but also low-rise residential houses situated in areas with district heating. About 80% of residential buildings are provided by district heating and the approximate share of district heating service in the city is about 65%. District heating service on the Western bank of the river Dnieper is provided by the Communal Utility of Kamianske City Council “Teplomerezhi”, which operates 19 boiler houses of a total installed heat production capacity of 526 Gcal/h, 45 CHS and 4 pump stations.
Kamianske Demonstration Project – overview
The proposed project involves the replacement of the piping network in a social housing area, supported by the disconnection of one storey buildings in a low heat density district and the installation of a new condensing gas boiler, which later can serve as peak boiler when being possible to install a base load boiler utilising biomass. These investments will dramatically reduce the use of fossil fuels in the system.
The project proposed by the company is interesting from a demonstration point of view as the investment is focussed on rehabilitating a worn-down district heating network utilising modern design principles, enabling future energy saving activities and customer orientation.
Kamianske Demonstration Project – details
Project area is situated in the southwest part of Kamianske city and includes the heated area of one boiler house located at Dalnia street 22-A.
Figure 1: Map of Kamianske with indication of the project area
Specifics of the Kamianske Project include:
- Installation of a condensing gas boiler (1×2.5 MW).
- Network replacement – approx. 4,600m district heating pipes.
- Disconnection of one storey buildings.
- Demand Side Measures in multi-storey buildings.
The proposed investment is EUR 964,500 with a simple pay-back time of 6.5 years. The proposed financing plan is as follows:
- Total loan – EUR 300,000 (31%)
- Total grant – EUR 300,000 (31%)
- Total Kamianske local contribution – EUR 364,500 (38%)
Once implemented, the project is expected to benefit the local community by:
- Saving 4,010 MWh heat per year (39% saving from the baseline*)
- Saving 420,000 m³ gas per year (39% saving from the baseline*)
- Saving 547 m³ water per year (25% saving from the baseline*)
- Saving 865 tonnes CO2 per year (36% saving from the baseline*)
*Baseline is estimated for the networks in question only (not the entirety of the district heating in Kamianske) for the case of no-project activity.
The project is under review on request by the city.
